Narrow shave for rail workers

by Anura Maitipe

Railway workers had a narrow escape when they were nearly run over by Matara bound train from Vavuniya at the Mirigama railway station on Thursday, Railway department sources told the "Sunday Observer".

Over 20 workers were engaged in repair works of the tracks at that time.

Since the track was under repairs, all Colombo bound trains had been signalled to use the alternative track. However, the engine driver had not taken notice of this and the train was travelling on the same track and approaching the railway station where workers were doing repair work., sources added.

When they had seen a train was proceeding on the same track, they had moved away, thereby avoiding a possible tragedy.

The station master of Mirigama railway station had informed higher officials at the Colombo Head office, who in turn had instructed him to notify the police about it. The police took the driver into custody and then to the Mirigama hospital to ascertain whether he was under the influence of liquor.
