S. Korea's employment opportunities to be advertised

by Ananda Kannangara

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) yesterday confirmed that advertisements with regard to the 5000 employment opportunities in South Korea will be inserted in all newspapers between July 10 and 15.

These jobs were granted by the Korean Government following talks with Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratna recently. A large number of jobs were also granted by the Korean Government to six other countries including Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines.

Chairman, SLBFE Karunasena Hettiarachchi yesterday told the "Sunday Observer" that the Bureau has already made arrangements to insert the advertisements with details including the salary particulars of respective vacancies. All applications will have to be forwarded to the SLBFE Headquarters at Issipathana Mawatha, Colombo.

"No injustice will be done for any applicant and all persons will be selected on merits other than on personal grounds."

He said that males and females between the ages of 18 to 40 years are eligible to apply for jobs in Korea and they will have to pass at least the GCE (OL) examination.

"The vacancies are presently available in the field of Information Technology, construction and in the industrial sector," he said. Hettiarachchi also said that the Bureau has received reliable information on a racket of extorting money by a group of unscrupulous persons from foreign job seekers, promising that they will be given employment in South Korea.

"The victims of this racket are mostly young men and women in country's rural and urban areas such as Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Galle and Matara," he said. He said that no such individuals or job agents have been appointed to deal with the Korean job program, since all allocated jobs will be granted to Lankan workers through the proper Bureau channels.

Hettiarachchi also asked the general public to keep vigilant on such persons asking them to pay money for jobs in Korea and if detected inform it to the SLBFE Head Office in Colombo on telephone numbers 584770 or 501743.
