Govt. Press fire, report due tomorrow

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

The Government Analyst's report on the Government Press fire on June 26 evening is still not concluded. It would be forwarded to him on Monday, Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara told the `Sunday Observer'.

He, however, admitted that the cause for the fire may be due to a lit candle, left behind by the officer inside the Engineering Section after sealing the entrance to the building. No sabotage is suspected. The fire had damaged chemicals, unused paper rolls, office furniture and caused extensive damages to the century old building. Nanayakkara said that he is still unable to estimate the damage and it will take another two to three days to get the final audit report on damages. He also said that disciplinary action will be taken against the relevant officer if he is proved to be the culprit after he receives the reports of the Govt. Analyst and Police.

The Government Printer who earlier charged the Fire Brigade on being late to arrive at the Government Press premises on the day the sudden fire broke out, yesterday said that they had taken only five or six minutes to reach the place. "I think that I was given wrong information by security fellows" Nanayakkara said.

Contacted by the `Sunday Observer' Fire Brigade Chief J. Kannangara said that according to their `Occurrence Book' by 18.29 they had received two calls about the fire and by 18.30 two fire fighting vehicles had been sent to the place. "Within the next five minutes we had also sent a water bowser as well as a portable pump to the place", the Fire Chief said.

He said that it was the most serious incident reported within the first half of the year and was also the 259th incident for which they were summoned this year.
