Police now brace for PC elections by Anton Nonis With Provincial Council elections just round the corner, Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has instructed all police officers to strictly enforce measures to ensure a free and fair poll. The Inspector General said a police strength of 50,000 has been deployed, and have already moved into the respective assigned areas. The IGP has advised the Deputy Inspectors General and the Senior Superintendents to keep a strict vigil, specially on Army deserters and the underworld who may try to create violence. A vigil would be kept on politicians too to verify whether they deploy any criminals for mar the election, IGP de Silva said. As in the recently held elections, on this occasion too, the Police Election Secretariat will be manned by two DIGs, Gamini Navaratne and Jayantha Wickremaratne. In addition to police personnel, there will be two police units kept in readiness at the Police headquarters. The units will to rush to any troubled spot, the moment such assistance has been requested for by the local police. There had been 265 incidents reported upto last Friday, out of which 37 were criminal offences and the rest were violations of election laws. Police have taken 152 suspects into custody. Police will also keep a close watch on any misuse of government owned vehicles for election purposes. Unlike in the earlier election, this election will be handled exclusively by the police. However, the assistance of the Army, Navy and the Air Force may be sought if the need arise. Police will remain on duty even after the elections for about a week. However, this may be extended, depending on circumstances, DIG Wickremaratne who is in charge of criminal offences said. |
