International Relations courses at the BCIS The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, commonly known as the BCIS, is a tertiary level educational institute specialising in all aspects of international relations including training, research and advanced studies. The BCIS is the academic wing of the S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike National Memorial Foundation established under Act of Parliament No. 2 of 1975 states a press release by the BCIS Director Dr. Thusitha Tennakoon. In July 2003, BCIS introduced a new curriculum, modernised upto 21st century standards, in partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India for its academic programs in international relations. The three new academic programs, namely: Certificate Course in International Relations, Diploma in International Relations and Higher Diploma/Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations introduced under the new curriculum are presently being conducted successfully. The courses introduced under the new scheme enable anybody who is interested in furthering knowledge in international relations to be accommodated in the learning process, irrespective of the educational attainments. The idea is to make the BCIS more open to the public, especially public and private sector employees, members of the Armed Forces/Police, University students, school leavers and foreign students, rather than limiting the opportunities to a selected cross section of society with advanced level and graduate qualifications, as the case was. The entry requirements have been relaxed accordingly. Prospective candidates can register for the first two courses in all three media: Sinhala/Tamil/English, while the Higher Diploma/Post-Graduate Diploma courses will be conducted in English medium only. The Centre utilise the services of more than 20 well-qualified scholars, on visiting basis, to teach various subjects pertaining to the above courses. Lectures are held in BCIS lecture rooms situated within the BMICH premises. The Centre also has its own specialised library with over 12,000 volumes dedicated to International Affairs in addition to related foreign and local journals, newspapers, etc. It is also a depository library of the United Nations. The facilities of the Centre will be at the disposal of the selected candidates. Furthermore, the BCIS, being a non-profit, service oriented organisation, offers the above courses at a reasonable fee. The applications for the intake of students for the Academic Year 2004/05 are invited till 07th July 2004. Only a limited number of participants will be selected for these courses through qualifying examinations scheduled to be held on 17th and 18th July 2004. The applications and relevant information are now available at the BCIS and could be obtained by paying Rs. 100 or by sending a self-addressed envelope bearing Rs. 9.00 stamps with a money order in favour of Director/BCIS and the Torrington Square sub-post office as the paying office.
