German Foreign Minister due here

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chancellor of Germany Joschka Fischer will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 17 on a two-day visit. He will be accompanied by a delegation of senior officials, parliamentarians and businessmen. The German Foreign Minister's visit is part of a ten-day tour to India, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladeah and Pakistan.

The visiting minister will pay courtesy calls on the President and the Prime Minister and meet with Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar with whom he will hold bilateral talks. He will also meet the Leader of the Opposition during the visit.

Mr. Fischer is a member of the Alliance 90/Greens Party and has been the German Foreign Minister since October 1998.

Karuna shows his talent in sculpturing in London

A Buddhist statue sculptured by Karuna Basnayaka was recently exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A large gathering of both British and Sri Lankan friends were there on the opening day to see his works and amongst them was Professor Lakshman Perera.

Earlier Basnayaka made his debut in sculpturing at the Mary Ward Centre in Bloomsbury where he sculptured the statue of 'Anagarika' Dharmapala. Picture shows Basnayaka with Prof. Lakshman Perera at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Mrs. L.G. Charlotte aged 61 years of 'Janaka' Manelgama, Kamburupitiya is confined to a wheelchair due to severe osteoarthritis in her knee joints.

Dr. B.M.S. Udagedara, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, General Hospital Matara has recommended total knee replacement surgery (TKR). The estimated cost for the operation is about Rs. 500,000.
