Tyronne wants UNPers to boycott elections Former Foreign Affairs Minister and veteran politician Tyronne Fernando yesterday called upon all UNPers in the country to refrain from voting at the forthcoming Provincial Council election as a mark of protest against the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. "There is no provisions in the UNP Constitution to remove the leader. If there were, we could have done it long ago to make the UNP an effective party", he said. Since the UNPers cannot remove him, this is the best opportunity for them to protest against the autocratic and undemocratic leader thus pressuring him to step down, he added. "My priority in politics was to always have a close affinity with the common man and an ineffective and unjust leadership in the UNP did not allow me to continue", he said. He further said that he found a most far-sighted and democratic leadership and a greater affinity with the common man in the SLFP. He also predicted that it was obvious that the forthcoming elections will not make or break a government and asked all the voters to use their valuable vote in an appropriate manner to protest against the unfair conduct of the UNP leadership. "He ill-treated me by dropping me from the national list after serving the UNP and Parliament for 27 years is the best example for UNPers to understand how ungrateful Ranil was for party men", Fernando concluded. He was the national organizer for Moratuwa from 1976 to 2004. |
