Ananda stun Isipathana 8-5 by Lal Gunesekera Ananda pulled off a great 8 points (1 try, 1 penalty) to 5 (1 try) win over Isipathana in their schools' rugby match at Longden Place yesterday after leading 3-0 at half time. This was the first time that Ananda had beaten Isipathana since playing each other from 1985. Earlier, Ananda, had yet another superb win over S. Thomas' (8-5). For Isipathana, this seems to be one of their worst seasons in many years. Their defeat at the hands of Ananda yesterday was their third successive defeat having earlier lost to St. Anthony's 5-10 and Wesley 13-18. Just before the breather, fly-half Nipuna put Ananda ahead with a 22-metre penalty after missing a 35-metre attempt minutes earlier. Isipathana's full-back too missed a difficult 40-metre penalty in the 22nd minute. In the sixth minute after the "turn around", Ananda, went further ahead through a try by Indika which went unconverted. Seven minutes later, Isipathana missed a very simple 20 metre penalty in front of the posts, but Ananda too fluffed an easy 22 metre penalty a few minutes later. Just on time, Isipathana's left winger touched down for an unconverted try. D. Nimal refereed. However, Isipathana won both junior games - Under-13 by 49 points to nil and Under-15 by 38 points to nil. |
