Lankan junior paddlers impress in China Sri Lanka under-12 team played exceptionally well and in the group stages beat several countries including the host country China "B" at the World Circuit Junior Table Tennis Championships being held in Taiyuan, China. The lads eventually lost to China "A", but won the admiration of all other countries where the national game in these countries is table tennis. The team comprised: Chameera Ginige and Hasintha Sashiranga (both from Dharmashoka College, Ambalangoda) and Samitha Abeyrathna (Royal College, Colombo). Individual performances In the under-12 boys age group, Hasintha Sashiranga (Dharmashoka College) and Samitha Abeyrathna (Royal College) have reached the quarter final stage after playing excellent table tennis to beat their opponents. In the under-12 girls age group, Chavindya de Silva (Dharmashoka College) and Lakmini Karunaratne (Holy Family BMV, Kurunegala) reached the quarter finals. In the under-15 boys age group, Sajith Kavinda (St. Benedict's College, Colombo) advanced to the quarter finals displaying good control and temperament against more experienced opponents who have travelled around the world circuit to gain ranking points. Due to financial constraints faced by the TTASL, the parents of players were compelled to meet the finances required for their children. The success of these players are mainly due to the parents who have always stood by their children in the development of the game. |
