Kingswood stop Antonians 8-6 by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr. Kingswood College ended St. Anthony's unbeaten run when they pulled off an exciting 8 points (1 try, 1 penalty) to 6 (1 drop goal, 1 penalty) win in their schools Singer Trophy rugger match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Antonians led 6-3. Antonians missed at least 3 penalties from kicking distances. Kingswood who opened scoring early through a penalty fired by full back Eranda Weerakoddy. But the Antonians fought back through a penalty converted by fly half Mohammed Reyal to equalise. But the Antonians took over the lead in the 20th minute of this half when fly half Reyal executed a beauty of drop goal when he found the Kingswoods defence in disarray. Heavy rain before the match made ground conditions wet and soggy and ball handling was difficult. The line outs were shared, but in the scrums Kingswoods Heshan Premaratne struck faster than his opposite number. Kingswood's turn around came with a penalty inside Antonians '22' scrum half Heshan Premaratne took the short tap to score off a ruck a few metres away from the left post. Weerakoddy failed to add the extra points. With minutes ticking away, the Antonians made a determined in the final few minutes of play before time ran out for them. A Rankothge refereed. Kingswoodian won the under 17 game 12-10. |
