Trinity win rib bruiser 21-15 over Thomians Kandy sports corr. at Pallekelle Trinity College pulled off a great 21 points (3 tries, 2 penalties) to 15 (3 tries), win over S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia to regain the Canon R. S. de Saram Shield in their rugger match played at Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle yesterday. At half time Thomian led 10-8. It was a great fight back by the Trinitians after trailing behind in the first half. The Thomians scored a try almost with the kick but failed to consolidate despite some power play by their hard working No. 8 Namal Rajapakse. A distinguished spectator at this match was Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who was seen in the company of Central Province Governor Monty Gopallawa. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse was present even for the two junior matches which will no doubt encourage the young ruggerites to perform before VVIPS. Scrums and line outs appeared to be shared but it was in the loose the Trinitians tilted game in their through some good passing and line kickings. Trinity scored their tries through lock forward Roshan Munaweera (1 try) centre S. Manickam (1 try) and winger R. Pushpakumara (1 try) winger Isuru Jayasena fired the two penalties. For the Thomian centre S. Siriwardeena (1 try) No. 8 Namal Rajapakse (1 try) and Centre S. Karthelis (1 try) did the scoring but they could have pulled this game had they the services of a reliable place kicker. Orville Fernando refereed. Trinity became the first winners of the Norman Walter Challenge award for the Under-17 match when they beat the Thomians quite convincingly 36-5. Gerald Rasiah refereed. |
