Royal's 24-0 comeback over Wesley

by Ranjan Anandappa

Royal sprang back with a vegeance to completely overhaul a jaded looking Wesley outfit to inflict their first defeat in the current rugger season to record a 24 points ( three goals and a penalty) to nil win at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

Royal compensated for last year's 18-22 defeat at the hands of the Wesleyites and this year to the Katugastota Antonians with a fine display of attacking rugby.

Royal went on the offensive from the outset and the Wesleyites wilted under the enormous pressure applied by the Royalists. Royal's diligent set of forwards Danushka Rajapakse, Ayesh Rashid, Prabath Udugampaola and Faizal, supported by their fast running back division sent the Wesleyites into submission with repeated forays.

The highly vocal Wesley supporters were reduced into Ah's! and ooh's! as the Wesleyites kept on making errors right through the game as Royal applied the pressure.

Shehab Bahudeen the Royal full back was the pick of the players unleashing a superb game in attack and defence. Bahudeen's judicious kicks to touch and joining the line to form the overlap was a source of irritation for the Wesleyites.

The winners opened scoring early off a line out with the Royal's forwards driving ahead, and winger Danush Dissanayake scored off a push over try and Bahudeen gave the extra points. Then Bahudeen himself pierced the Wesley defence to score and put over the conversion to give Royal a healthy lead 17-0 half time.

Wesley kept Royal at bay in the second half for a while with a slightly improved display. But they were unable to score due to lack of penetration. The only opportunity that Wesley had to score too, was denied when their winger dropped the ball after crossing the Royal line.

Referee: Dilroy Fernando.
