ASEAN regional meeting focuses on security

Jakarta, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) The 11th Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), held Friday in the Indonesian capital, focused attention on the main political and security problems affecting regional stability.

Delegates from 23 countries also analyzed the action plan approved this week by ASEAN foreign ministers, regarding closer regional cooperation in security affairs and the need to guarantee protection of maritime routes, sources informed.

The recent dispute between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the nuke issue, and the situation in Iraq and the Middle East were also discussed.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was founded in 1967 and is grouping Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The decision to create the ASEAN Regional Forum was made in 1994, also including 13 partners from the bloc: China, Australia, Canada, South Korea, DPRK, India, Japan, the US, Mongolia, New Zeland, Papua New Guinea, Russia and the European Union.
