CUGA seeks firm assurance by Ananda Kannangara The Combined Unemployed Graduates' Association (CUGA) has sought a firm assurance from Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama that the vacancies in the public sector would be filled by the 30,000 unemployed graduates who have already been identified by the government. In a letter to the Minister, the CUGA has urged for an immediate discussion with him to enlighten their plight seeking a feasible solution for the problem. About 29,000 more unregistered jobless graduates have also forwarded their applications, it is reliably understood. Convener, CUGA Chandana Sooriyaarachchi, said that in response to the government's recent request, an unprecedented number of 56,000 graduates in the country have applied for public sector employment. According to the government's pledge, 27,000 unemployed graduates will be provided employment in the fields of technology, computer, teaching, clerical and in various other suitable categories before the end of next month. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry which has been empowered to scrutinise the applications of unemployed graduates, has notified all applicants to produce an affidavit, signed by a Justice of the Peace to ensure that they are not presently engaged in public sector jobs. Sooriyaarachchi said it was deplorable that graduates already employed either in public sector or outside have also applied to the government's new job scheme which had already identified 27,000 unemployed graduates. Asked whether the government was able to grant such a large number of jobs to graduates within a short period, Sooriyaarachchi remarked that it was not a difficult task, since several ministries had already informed that there were about 25,000 vacancies in all categories in the Management Service Department (MSD) which was under the Ministry of Finance. |
