A high powered Chinese delegation headed by Governor of the Hainan Province Wei Liucheng arrived in Sri Lanka last week to set up the Friendship-Province relationship between the Southern Province and Hainan Province for greater economic and cultural co-operation between the two provinces. The delegation yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Galle for promoting economic and cultural co-operation between the two provinces. A Memorandum of Understanding for educational and scientific co-operation will be signed today between the University of Ruhuna and the Hainan University of China and also with the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) Southern Campus. The visit of the delegation follows a Letter of Intent signed between the Governor of the Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickramaratne and Governor of the Hinan Province Wei Liucheng in April this year. Liucheng told the media in Colombo that the establishment of this Friendship-Province relationship would promote economic, educational and cultural co-operation as well as strengthen the long standing political and cultural co-operation between the two provinces. Under the MoU, the Hainan University will provide two scholarships to the Ruhuna University every year to study Chinese in China. A special training programme will be conducted by the Hainan Airlines to train and recruit air-assistants from Sri Lanka. Training programmes will be conducted for management trainees in the hotel trade in the Southern Province and later provide employment opportunities in China. The delegation met President Chandrika Kumaratunga last Friday where she highlighted the importance of setting up similar friendship relationships in other provinces as well. The delegation that comprised high ranking State officials and private sector business magnates in the realm of trade, industry and tourism is also expected to sign a MoU with the Chamber of Commerce of the Southern Province. |
