CMC hard on heels with corrupt food suppliers The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is awaiting the final report of the City Analyst to take legal action against the food supplier, who operated a massive food racket, in which outdated food items imported then relabelled at his warehouse in Mattakkuliya. The substandard food items had been sold to supermarkets and hotels. Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told the 'Sunday Observer' that the CMC has taken legal action against the distributor without a CMC licence. "All eating outlets and food stores have to be registered with the CMC under No. 26 of the Food Act of 1980 and this particular warehouse owner operated the business without registering it with the CMC", he added. However, the businessman had been charged a mere Rs. 3000 without a CMC licence, last week. According to Dr. Kariyawasam this is the maximum fine that could be imposed under existing law," he pointed out. Government Analyst's report on labelling violations have already been submitted to the CMC. But, the chemical analysis of the City Analyst is pending to take legal action against the distributor for alleged expiry date alterations on labels of the food items. Over 80,000 food items found at the warehouse had been destroyed by the CMC. (SS) |
