Manel Jayasena passes away

Veteran state and tele-drama actress Manel Jayasena passed away yesterday morning after suffering from a kidney failure.

Manel was best known for her performance as Grusha in 'Hunuwataye Kathawa' for over 32 years. She won the best actress award for her excellent performance at the State Drama Festival in 1963 for her performance in Kuweni, which was the first public appearance of Manel as an actress as well as singer. Since then Manel became one of the best performers on stage in Sri Lanka.

Her exquisite appearance in the series of dramas produced by her husband Henry Jayasena won hearts of the theatre lovers. 'Thawath Udasenak' in 1964, 'Manaranjana Wedawarjana in 1965, 'Ahas Maliga' in 1966, 'Hunuwataye Kathawa' in 1967, 'Apata Puthe Magak Nethe' in 1968, 'Diriya Mava Saha Ege Daruwo', in 1972 and 'Sarana Siyoth Se Puthuni Hamba Yana' in 1975 were the stage dramas that portrayed the wonderful acting talents of Manel.

Manel was known to play all the heart-warming characters on television and was popular for her performances in 'Nedaeyo', 'Tikiri Nilame, 'Sooriya Daruwo' and 'Hima Kumari.'

The funeral will take place tomorrow at the General Cemetery at 5.00 pm.
