Appeal to young graduates to join AAUPCC

The newly elected President of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya - Colombo Chapter (AAUPCC) C. W. Jayasekera appealed the young graduates to join the organisation and provide them assistance to fulfil their aspirations, at the press conference conducted by the AAUPCC at Police Pavilion, Police Park on last Sunday.

There are over 25,000 Peradeniya Alumni live in and around Colombo but the total membership of the AAUPCC is about 2000 and majority of them were graduates passed out from Peradeniya before 1980. Mr. Jayasekera thanked the UDA for providing 15 perches of land at Rajagiriya to construct the 'Alumni Centre'. Our major target this year is to complete the construction of long awaited Alumni Centre, he added.

The AAUPCC will conduct their annual family get-together for members on August 1 at Hotel Mount Lanka. Those interested could contact the Secretary on or before July 28 (Telephone - 0777609599, 2252112 or 2932428).

Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama will deliver the oration in memory of the founder President of the Association on August 17, 2004 at the BMICH.

The AAUPCC is planning to provide 14 scholarships to 2 students each from 7 faculties at Peradeniya University. A merit scholarship to the best student at the General Arts Qualifying examination offering Sinhala as a subject in memory of Mr. Rambanda Seneviratne, former official of the Association.

Mr. Jayasekera also stated that the AAUPCC has solicited a donation of Rs. 2 million given by the family members of Mr. Siripala Weerawardane for the proposed art gallery and museum project to be launched by the University of Peradeniya on August 29, 2004.

He said, the AAUPCC will undertake a pilot project to develop the standards of the University non-academic staff by initiating a training programme for the Assistant Registrars and staff.

The AAUPCC too has launched their website - www.aaupcc.org which contains all necessary information of the organisation and universities in the island.

The Association is making arrangements to conduct an Eye Camp for the benefit of new entrants to Peradeniya Campus. The AAUPCC will provide free spectacles for the needy students.

Karunajeeva, Athauda Jayawardana, Ms. Indra Jayasekera, Ms. Sujatha Karunaratne and Miss Tamara Sivagurunathan.
