Human element in IT sector important

Being enthusiastic about what he does, taking the initiative, dedication and having faith are the pillars of success for the CEO of Zeelabs (pvt) Ltd and Lkspace.com Zulfer Hassen.

He was born the eldest to a family of four children in Colombo. "I never wanted to go with the flow " Zulfer said adding "maybe it started with my birth."

"I am a twin and have a sister and we were born on January first which is quite a rare occurrence," he said. His early years were spent in Nigeria where his father was positioned as a manager. At the age of twelve when we returned it was a complete change for me," he said.

Zulfer had his secondary education at Alethea International School. From the early stages he was an active participant of all activities at school and was the Head Prefect.

He left school in 1999 and worked at several places to get hands on experience and observe the obstacles faced in the day to day running of a company. The next year he decided to pursue his vision. From an early age he was interested in computers and emerging technologies. This interest played a major role in shaping his vision and future career.

Zeelabs (Pvt) Limited was the result of a 19- year- old young man's vision. Established in 2001, at the initial stages Zeelabs was at the Concept Nursery. When Zeelabs started being recognized as an IT solutions company which provides services of the highest quality, they graduated from Concept Nursery. Zeelabs was one of the companies that graduated from Concept Nursery without an external investment, Zulfer said.

While he was busy with the activities of Zeelabs he also ventured into the Web hosting arm of the IT industry by launching Lkspace.com. Unlike most startup IT companies Zeelabs was fortunate to be recognized as a total IT solutions provider at the initial stages.

This paved the way for them to secure key accounts in different verticals of the economy, from the Premadasa Group of companies in the print sector to the Ceylon Hotels Corporation in the hospitality industry. They are also moving out in to the offshore market, their most recent client being Aureos Capital Limited, UK, which is the largest private equity fund manager in the world.

"At a certain stage in your life you need to have direction, a goal, and you have to work towards it no matter what," he said. As a final thought he added: "To succeed in any career, especially in the IT sector where technology and machines are very much involved, you need to have the human element in whatever you do and you need to know that at the end you are dealing with people. That is what my dream of launching Zeelabs is all about, providing humane IT solutions; Zulfer concluded.
