Garment exhibition promotes local products

by Ananda Kannangara

The Sri Lanka Garment Buying Offices Association (SLGBOA) will conduct its annual mega "Garment Times Show" at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC), D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha, Colombo from September 16 to 19.

"The objective of holding the exhibition is to promote the Sri Lankan garment industry in the overseas and also to show the international buyers the capabilities of the Sri Lankan garment industry through the manufacturer's exhibits, seminars and fashion shows," Chief Executive, S.D. Publications (The publisher of Garment Times Magazine) Sujith Gunawardana told the "Sunday Observer".

The show will also be patronised by local buying office representatives and manufacturers themselves. The opening ceremony will be held on September 16 at 5.00 pm while the exhibition will be conducted from September 17 to 19 between 10 am to 7. 00 pm.

The GTS will also focus on the participation of the entire garment industry from manufacturers of garments to suppliers of fabrics, accessory and machinery.

"Although this is a buyer focused show, the fabric, accessory and machinery companies in the suppliers section will have an opportunity to show the manufacturers what they have to offer," he said.

Gunawardana said in other export industries, the buyer comes in contact with the manufacturers only and in the garment industry buyers contact is long before the raw material goes in for production. " We also convince the buyers of the availability of accessories, fabrics, sophisticated machinery and after sales service for that machinery," he added.

"It will be an added feature for both the visiting buyers and the local manufacturers as they can source fabrics and accessories from the suppliers for the orders being placed with the manufacturers all under one roof," he noted.

"The manufacturers will gain knowledge on various topics related to the industry including design and marketing,"he said.

He said the prospective participants can make use of this opportunity by conforming participation well in advance to gain publicity among the buyers in all visits and other promotions taking place during this period.

"We also thank the SriLankan Airlines for helping us to take our representatives to several destinations in order to promote the Sri Lankan garment industry through," Gunawardana added.
