Missing Rs. 289m not with us, says Taruna Aruna

Taruna Aruna Institute Chairman Lyn Fernando, in a media release in response to our lead story on Sunday, August 1, 2004, titled "Taruna Aruna: Rs. 289m. amiss" says that the total amount received by the Institute is only Rs. 201, 438, 060 and the missing amount of Rs 289m is not with them.

The media release also says:

"The sensational headline news of the Sunday Observer of August 1 alleging that a sum of Rs. 289 million has gone missing from the Taruna Aruna Institute has no foundation.

"According to our auditors the records in both the Treasury and Ministry of Labour confirm that the total amount of money received by Taruna Aruna Institute and correctly accounted for is only 201,438,060 and the difference is the money allocated and the money actually received. "The reference to the eight Chambers of Commerce being paid Rs. 90,000 per month while the Chamber of Commerce in Jaffna is paid Rs. 50,000 per month to train graduates is totally incorrect and misleading.

"There was a need to have regional offices in the nine provinces and as the Taruna Aruna Institute could not afford to set up their own offices, eight selected officers of the Jobs Net Program was entrusted with the task.

"The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jaffna also had its premises and infrastructure in place. "Each of the Jobs Net Offices received a sum of Rs. 90,000 whilst the Jaffna office received a sum of Rs. 50,000 monthly. No Chamber of Commerce other than Jaffna received any money from this program. "Whilst it's true that the Taruna Aruna Institute was originally housed in the Race Course premises of the Ministry of Samurdhi, Youth Affairs and Sports.

They were compelled to vacate and move to Dharmapala Mawatha to rented premises and paid a rent of Rs. 70,000 per month with the concurrence of the then Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P. B. Jayasundera.

Following the change of the Government the Institute was housed for a short period in Jawatta Road, a property belonging to the Ministry of Labour but the institute was compelled to vacate the premises at the request of the Ministry of Labour and with the concurrence of the Ministry, the Institute rented the present premises at Rosmead Place in February 2003 for a rent of Rs. 70,000 per month."
