New unit on way, but where to fix it? by Shanika Sriyananda The establishment of the country's first ever fully equipped gastro-entomology unit, an urgent need with bowel diseases, may get delayed due to lack of space at the Colombo National Hospital (CNH). The high tech laboratory equipment is scheduled to arrive shortly from Japan. Two endoscopes, one diathtery and a one beaten probe unit are among the stock. "It is necessary to have a separate unit to deal with bowel, liver and pancreas diseases since such diseases are on the rise", Dr. N. M. Navarathne, country's first fully qualified Gastro-entomologist who had struggled hard to set up a separate unit at the CNH told the Sunday Observer. According to Dr. Navaratne, the order to import this medical equipment was placed in July and the stock will arrive before the end of September. It is very difficult to find a place to locate the unit at the CNH. The equipment will be installed in the 'Medical Investigation Unit', which is in the common laboratory of the CNH," he said. There are two wards for patients with intestinal diseases and two evening clinics which function daily. Over 15 patients are referred to district hospitals to seek treatment from the clinics, which started four months ago. "I requested a suitable location from the Director CNH to set up the unit but the problem is the lack of space. There are buildings at the hospital built with the assistance of the private sector and land to built units were also given by the private donors to the hospital. We requested the business community to assist us in setting up this important unit, which will have the facilities for testing even rare bowel diseases", he said adding that some of the tests were not available in the private sector hospitals and patients had to go abroad to undergo these tests. |
