Pay hike for public servants with budget by Ananda Kannangara Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama recently says that no interim allowance of Rs. 3000 will be paid for public servants since their salaries would increase under the first budget of the UPFA government shortly. Dr. Amunugama told the Sunday Observer that the new salary scheme would be prepared on proposals based on the Tissa Devendra Salaries Commission. "The new salary scheme will be effective from January 2005," he assured. Dr. Amunugama also focused the attention on several statements made by a section of public servants that they would stage a protest campaign if the government did not positively respond to the request made by major trade unions represented by the Public Sector Trade Union Committee (PSTUC). The PSTUC had made a request to the President and the Finance Minister to grant an interim allowance of Rs. 3000 to all public servants, considering the present cost of living in the country. Minister Amunugama said that the present salary scales of public servants and salary anomalies would be scrutinised carefully before implementing the new salary scheme. Meanwhile, the PSTUC convener, W. H. Piyadasa, said that the government should consider the request of trade unions for an interim allowance of Rs. 3000, since a salary increase for public servants within three months of the new government coming to power had been pledged by the UPFA during its election campaign. |
