ICT on transport: Sri Lanka far behind

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

The `International Conference on Application of ICT in Transport Systems in Developing Countries,' which was successfully concluded in Kalutara yesterday stressed that the country was far behind in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in transport systems, but it had potential for a better transport service.

The conference also highlighted that while the political and social phenomena were the main constraints for ICT application in a country's transport system, institutional and educational barriers also contributed to a great extent.

The conference highlighted the need for a transference governance which could eliminate the lack of innovation, dynamism and confidence to work with the technology. Moratuwa University Transport Engineering Division of the Civil Engineering Department hosted the international conference. Intellectuals from several countries with the country's experts in the subject participated.

National Transport Commission Chairman, Dr. Amal Kumarage, told the `Sunday Observer' that the conference covered 19 technical papers and presentations on how to apply ICT in Sri Lanka's highways, traffic, traffic signals, safety, public transport and several other topics.

Participants from Canada, USA, India, Singapore, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan presented their systems and the means of applying their systems in Sri Lanka for a streamlined transport service.

The forum noted that the country's ICT application was very minimal in transport systems except in international aviation and shipping and urged the authorities to take immediate action to identify Sri Lanka as a regional hub.
