Minimising crime gets top priority by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Several proposals aimed at minimising crime is being studied by the Public Security Law and Order Ministry to make further recommendations to the government to tackle the perennial problem in the country. Last Friday's top level conference Presided over by the Public Security and Law and Order Minister, Ratnasiri Wickramanayake discussed key issues. The meeting was also attended by Secretary to the Ministry Tilak Ranavirajah, IGP, Indra de Silva, Senior DIG Bodhi Liyanage (Crimes) and DIG, Crimes and Narcotics Jayantha Wickremaratne, DIG, Colombo Sirisena Hearth and other senior DIGs and SSPs. Minister Wickramanayake expressed grave concern about escalating crime especially in a Buddhist country and said that urgent measures have to be taken to minimise crime. The recent crimes committed in Colombo allegedly by the LTTE cadres does not seem to augur well for the ongoing peace process, he said. IGP, Indra de Silva said that number of murders have increased during the past six months as a result of warfare between underworld gangs. The killings are mostly reprisals and in many instances automatic weapons have been used. Fifty percent have been reported from the Western Province. Of the 29 underworld gangs at least three are active at present and the police are keeping a tab on their activities. DIG (Crimes and Narcotics), Jayantha Wickremaratne said that drug addicts were responsible for several house breaking and theft cases. There were 1800 cases reported during the past six months. Tilak Ranavirajah said that screening of obscene and sexual films have resulted in the increase of rape cases in the recent past. |
