CWC joins Government by S. Selvakumar The much talked about CWC's support to the UPFA government is now definitely forthcoming around next week probably beginning August 16, reliable high ranking political sources said. The Presidential Secretariat was a hive of activity on Friday finalising matters towards this union. Discussions regarding this were held between the government and the CWC during the last two months and CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman met with Indian leaders in New Delhi last month and the talks there centered round extending support to the government. It is reliably understood that Thondaman has declined to accept any ministerial portfolios out of the two allocated to the party and instead, party's deputy leader M. S. Sellasamy and Muththu Sivalingam would be allocated two ministries. Both will be assigned subjects involving Estate Infrastructure, Housing and National Water Supplies and Drainage. Two deputy ministerships, too, would be allocated to the CWC sources said. As a prelude to this Thurai Madhiyugarajah was appointed as Chairman of the Central Provincial Council, K. Visvanathan and A. M. D. Rajan were appointed as Deputy Chairmen of Uva Provincial Council and the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council respectively. In addition the Central Provincial Council was willing to accommodate a former CPC Minister V. Radakrishnan to a ministerial rank. Thondaman is presently out of the country but it is understood he has endorsed the moves in Colombo. The delay in not accepting the ministerial portfolios immediately is attributed to the present month of Aadi in the Hindu calendar which is considered a highly inauspicious according to Hindu's belief. The current month of Aadi ends on August 15 and the auspicious month of Aavani begins on August 16. |
