'UNP strict on discipline' by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The UNP is likely to suspend the membership of Western Provincial Councillor until he is proven innocent of alleged charges of molesting an underage girl and abducting her father. "The UNP is strict on discipline. This incident can not be considered a private affair of the member and we will not tolerate anyone tarnishing the image of the party," UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told the Sunday Observer. Soon after leader Ranil Wickremesinghe returns to the country, the Political Affairs Committee and the Working Committee will take up this issue, he said. When contacted the OIC of the Bambalapitiya Police said " there is a small complaint against a PC member and refused to divulge any information". However, another senior officer in the police station said that there is a complaint against the councillor for abducting the father of the molested girl. He also said that a complaint has also been lodged by the victim's father at the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) for molesting his 16 year old daughter. It is alleged that the Councillor was forcibly keeping the victim's 18 year old elder sister for about a year and had molested the victim when she was 12 years. The suspect is absconding. The NCPA and the Police are conducting investigations. |
