Maldivian paddlers win and lose

The Maldives national table tennis team - under the auspices of the Table Tennis Association of Maldives opened their tour of Sri Lanka with a mixed bag. They drew the event for girls, but lost the events for boys at the gymnasium of the University of Peradeniya on Friday.

Their eight-day goodwill tour is organised by the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association according to its President SP Daya Samaraweera.

The visiting Maldivian team will play girls and boys schools sides an also provincial teams from Central, Western Southern Provinces and a Sri Lankan veterans side. All matches will be played at the University Gymnasium, Peradeniya with Central Province Table Tennis Association as the hosts.

In the opening matches Dharmaraja College got the better of the Maldivian side by winning 2 events against one while Mahamaya College finished on an even keel.

In the event for girls Maldives beat Mahamaya Girls College in the under-13 match 3-2 while the Kandy school hit back in the under-15 event by winning 3-2 over the visitors.

Dharmaraja College won the boys event under 15, 3-0 and under-15 event 3-0 before losing the under-13 event 2-3.

The Maldivian under-13 team comprises - Girls: Fathmath Ifaga, Mariyam Sana, Aishath Yashwa, Mariyam Sahamath; Boys: Ahamed Sharufan, Ahamed Shifaz, Ibrahim Yameen, Hibban Ibrahim, Mohamed Atheed Sinan.Under-15 team: Girls: Aishath Nisha, Mariyam Shafeez, Aminath Sana Mohammed, Fathmath Rashfa, Boys: Hussein Shifnan, Mohammed Munthif, Mohammed Shaffah.

Senior team: Women: Mueena Mohammed; Men: Ibrahim Shiuree, Ismail Shahid, Ismail Suja, Officials: Ahamed Latheef (President), Mohammed Imtiaz (Team Manager), Mohammed Altaf (Sports Development Officer TTAM), Vajira Wickremasinghe (Head Coach), Aishath Aleefa (Coach), Mifzal Ahamed (Technical Officer).
