Lankan schoolers too much a current for Indians

Sri Lankan swimmers proved to be too much of a gale force for their Indian counterparts at the 3rd Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka Schools Dual Age Group Swimming Championships hosted by Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association at the S. Thomas' College Swimming pool, Mt. Lavinia yesterday.

On day one, locals floated their way to win 53 events of the 56 events worked off in six age categories and open.

Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity College and Sunethra Wijeratne of Mahamaya College, Kandy, were outstanding winning three events each.

Unamboowe, swimming in the boys under-14, won the 200-metres individual medley, 50-metres butterfly and 50-metres backstroke.

Meanwhile, Wijeratne won the 200 individual medley, 50-metres butterfly and 50-metres backstroke for girls under-12.

National swimmer from Kandy Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School bagged two events in the girls under-14 - 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres butterfly stroke and is in line for a triple today swimming in the 50-metres breaststroke.

Others who performed were M. Hulangamuwa (Trinity) boys under-12 - winning the 100-metres individual medley and 25-metres butterfly, Milinda Wickremasinghe (St. Joseph's College) boys under-18 - won 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres butterfly, Dharshaka Tennekoon (LIC) boys open - 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres backstroke, Dilina Dissanayake (Trinity) boys under-16 - won 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres butterfly, Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa (Musaeus College) girls under-16 took the 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres backstroke, Mihiri Kandanarachchi (Mahamaya College, Kandy), girls under-18 - won 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres butterfly.

Shanika Wimalantha (Mahamaya) girls open - won 200-metres individual medley and 50-metres butterfly.

Of the Indians, V. K. R. Meenakshi girls under-10, Sanianan Shah girls under-8 and Shail Shah girls under-14 won an event each. Meenakshi won the 100-metres individual medley, Shah the 25-metres backstroke and Shail the 50-metres backstroke.

Sri Lanka Schools swimmers also made a clean sweep of the 4x25 metres medley relays winning all 14 relays in both boys and girls of all six age groups and the open.

Sri Lanka Schools won the Dr. Sadayavel Kailasam Challenge Trophy - having been overall champions in the inaugural year 2002 in Colombo and they went on to retain the overall title in 2003 in Chennai and with yesterday's performance and today's feats are expected to retain the overall title for the third successive year.

The meet will be continued today from 8.00 a.m. and the closing ceremony and distribution of awards will take place at 5.00 p.m. under the patronage of Nirupam Rao, High Commissioner for India in Sri Lanka. L. K. Jayaweera, Director of Sports of the Ministry of Education and Dr. Sadayavel Kailasam, Secretary, Madras District Aquatic Association will be guests of honour.
