Ex-soldier braves it to LTTE territory An ex- special force soldier private Pradeep Kumar Hettiarchchi who deserted the Army in 1998 returned to war torn Killinochchi, now breathing relief of peace last week. This time he went with the intention of joining his earlier enemy the LTTE. Accompanied in the journey was his mother but he alone visited the LTTE land and offered his services to the Tigers. The Tigers received him warmly but turned down his request stating it was not proper for a Sinhalese to join the LTTE. However the Tigers have given him a good holiday at their base. Hettiarchchi had been given the opportunity to visit the important location in the LTTE held territory. After 20 days excursion in the Tiger territory Hettiarchchi had joined his mother to return to his home in Warakapola. (RS) Mobile rice selling outlets Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry will soon commence a mobile rice selling services in Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts to give relief to the public who suffer from the increasing rice prices in the market. Ministry sources announced that ten lorries will be sent to Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts to buy rice directly from the farmers. Ministry sources assured that they would buy rice from the farmers at reasonable prices and sell to Western Province consumers below the current market price. He added that the Agriculture Ministry will utilise its money and not allow middlemen to make this venture another business. He stressed that one customer will be issued only a bag of rice of five kgs or less. He assured that the scheme will be extended to other provinces after assessing the success of the project in the Western Province.(DPL) Appeal Eleven-year-old Lasadun Praveena Silva of No. 7, Second Lane, Sethsiriuyana, Nagoda, Kalutara is suffering from Chronic Renal Failure and is being treated at Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya. Lasadun has now reached end stage Renal Failure and need Dialysis therapy and subsequent renal transplantation. He requires a donor kidney and substantial resources for transplantation and subsequent immunosuppressive therapy. His parents appeal to the general public to save his life by contributing to A/c No. 0039-209-082235-6 of People's Bank, Kalutara branch. |
