Housing project for victims of natural disasters

The International Association for Homeless Families (IAHF) opened its head office in Colombo recently. "The IAHF has made arrangements to implement a transit housing projects for the victims of natural disasters. We will build a housing scheme of 44 houses to provide temporary accommodation to people affected by natural disasters," IAHF President Ananda Basnayake told a media conference.

At normal times, the housing scheme can be converted into a school, religious institution or a library.

The first phase of the project will be implemented in Anuradhapura.

He said IAHF will build housing schemes, designed for dual use as houses and the community centres close to all the areas that have been identified as prone to natural disasters.

Basnayake, a Sri Lankan town planner living in Paris, said transit housing will help the families to continue education, employment and protect children from sex abuses which could be prevalent when the family structure shatters hit by natural or man made disasters.

"Massive social problems can arise due to displacement of people.

This system prevents the rise of such social menace," he said.
