Sumo wrestling
Sumo Wrestling - the traditional Japanese form of wrestling, is a popular sport. It is mostly a spectator sport with a limited amount of active participants. Wrestlers are often recruited when they are as young as 12 years old. And once they are recruited, they are housed in a sort of monastery where they undergo intensive training while serving their elders. The wrestlers are big made; as far as the spectators are concerned, the larger the contestant, the better! Some Sumo wrestlers weigh as much as 25 stone. At the beginning of a wrestling bout, the contestants spend some time 'warming up' before going in for physical contact. They alternately stomp, squat, throw salt (a special ritual) and glare at each other and then only attempt to drive out the opponent out of the king or throw him to the ground. |
