Death threat on Hospital Director From L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy The Director of the Kandy General Hospital (Teaching), Dr. Gamini Samarasinghe has complained to the police that he was threatened with death by persons believed to be pharmaceutical dealers for having revealed to the media that some pharmacies in Kandy sold syringes suspected to contain germs. This racket was published in the Lake House newspapers quoting Dr. Samarasinghe and other doctors. The gang had warned Dr. Samarasinghe that if he continued to reveal such information, the fate that befell Prof. Senaka Bibile would befall him. It had been found that some syringes sold in the area by some pharmacies contained germs and it was a risk to administer injections with such syringes. Hospital authorities suspect that used disposable syringes are sold to pharmacies by an organised gang. Following the revelation of this racket nearly 1000 syringes imported from Malaysia had been removed by the health authorities and sent to Colombo for investigations. Dr. Samarasinghe had also complained about the death threat to the Kandy Hospital police and the Health Ministry Secretary. |
