EPDP member shot dead

Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) chief organiser for Puttalam district, Thambithurai Sivakumar, 42, was shot dead at Ratmalgama, Puttalam by two men riding a motorcycle yesterday morning, around 10.15 a.m. He was a father of three children.

Sivakumar contested Jaffna district on the EPDP ticket at the last general election. Puttalam police are investigating.

Medal sweep by Sri Lanka at Informatics Olympiad

Sri Lanka national team of four students to the International Olympiad in Informatics this year at the IOI held in Athens following the Olympics has won one gold, and three bronze medals, the best performance by Sri Lanka so far.

The medal winners this year were: Gold - Parinda Jayasiri of Royal College Bronze - Chethiya Abeysinghe of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, Harshana Dantanarayana of Ananda College, Colombo and Sandaruwan Gunathilake of Sivali Central College, Ratnapura

The team was trained at the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

Heart patient seeks help

A Freelance journalist of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (Lake House), B. H. Leelaratne, is suffering from a severe heart disease and has been advised to undergo early coronary artery bypass graft surgery.Leelaratne is 56-years-old and a father of two young children.

The surgery to be performed at Nawaloka Hospital Ltd. and is estimated to cost around Rs. 310,000.Since he is unable to afford such a big amount, is seeking financial assistance from the general public and well-wishers. Cancer patient needs financial aid

Mrs. M. N. P. Peiris (31 years) is suffering form "Non Hodgkin Lymphoma". Since year 2000, she has been under treatment at National Cancer Institute, Maharagama. She was treated with Chemotherapy and radiotherapy several times before she was given eight doses of Rituximab (MabTera), which cost nine-hundred and fifty thousand rupees.

Now, her doctor has recommended a bone marrow transplant which is not available in Sri Lanka. The cost for this treatment is about four million rupees.

Since she is not in a position to spend this huge amount of money for medical treatment, she is seeking financial support to save her life. Cash donations or contributions may be sent to A/c No. 1003 5028 8389, Mrs. M. N. P. Peiris, Sampath Bank, Nugegoda.

L. Premawathie of 70/1, Railway Avenue, Nawinna, Maharagama is diagnosed to have cancer (Carcinoma of Ovary). She is unable to meet the cost of treatment estimated at Rs. 826,587.12 and appeals for help.
