CR goes tennis with Hanjin Tourney

Prize money totalling Rs. 150,000 is on offer at the inaugural Hanjin Open Tennis Championships of the CR & FC sponsored by Navigation Maritime Colombo (Pvt) Limited to be staged on the clay courts at Longden Place from September 22 to 26.

The winner of the men's singles will receive Rs. 30,000, runner-up Rs. 15,000 and the two losing semi-finalists Rs. 5,000 each. Women's singles winner Rs. 10,000, runner-up Rs. 5,000 the two losing semi-finalists Rs. 2500. Men's doubles winners Rs. 10,000 and runner-up Rs. 5,000.

The men's singles have 24 entries including Franklyn Emmanuel, Harshana Godamanne, Rohan de Silva and Amrith Rupasinghe, while the women's singles sees Thiyumi Abeysinghe, Amitha Arudhpragasam and Maleela Solih from Maldives playing for honours.

The women's singles have 16 entries.

Arul Amalanathan, who heads the Arul Amalanathan Tennis School, said that about three Indian players who are presently playing in the ITF Futures Championship in Delhi, too, are expected to play, but no confirmation has yet been received.

An Indian national, Amalanathan, was signed on by the SLTA in 2001 as a coach, but disposed of him later. His 'School' now has about 200 students and operates at S. Thomas' and CR & FC and hopes branching out to Galle and Kandy too in the near future.

Rohan Rajapakse is the Tournament Director with Walter Diaz as the Referee. The others present at the briefing were T.M.D. Williams (Managing Director of Navigation Maritime), Hadley Rodrigo also from Navigation Maritime, H. Park (Hanjin), Lionel Almeida (CEO of SLTA), Chula Dharmadasa (President, CR & FC), Jehan Canagaratne (Secretary of CR & FC) and Ronnie Gunaratne (CR &FC).
