Hardwork key to success

Manick Pratheeban PIC by Chinthaka kumarasinghe

Hard work, being himself, self confidence and not comparing him with anybody else are the pillars of success for Manick Pratheeban He was born as the youngest to a family of three boys. His father was a surveyor while his mother kept house and looked after the kids. He had his education at Royal College and sat for his Advanced level examination in Bio Science.

"Once I finished my Advanced Level examination I did an advanced diploma in Business Administration and joined Upali Group of companies as a Management Trainee," Pratheeban said.

He worked at Upali for one year and proceeded to UK for his MBA. Once he completed his MBA he worked at Thomas Cook as a Marketing Analyst for two years.

"Then I wanted to go back to University. I was selectd to the University of Westminister and did my MA in Applied Social Market Research. While at Univeristy I did research at the Home Office in UK, on asylum seekers and Racism within the Metropolitan Police.

My thesis was on the subject of peace and the peace process in Sri Lanka. I selected this topic as I felt it was timely because of the peace agreement signed between the government and the LTTE. I came to Sri Lanka to collect data and in the meantime did a survey on displaced persons perceptions about the peace process in Sri Lanka."

Once he completed his studies he joined Research International UK as a Market Researcher. " In 2003 personal responsibilities brought me back to Sri Lanka. Initially I worked with AC Nielson as a Market researcher. Now I am attached to HSBC Data Processing Lanka Ltd as a Assistant Manager Training. He also lectures on marketing for CIM, SLIM and University of Leicester conducted exams.

He said that at present there is a lack of proper marketers in Sri Lanka. Therefore the young should become professional marketers to fill the void in the future.

Pratheeban said that knowledge on different areas in marketing such as advertising, market research along with the qualifications will make the future marketers competent for the job.

He said that though youth in Sri Lanka are intelligent lack of enthusiasm makes them miss the opportunities.

He said that opportunities don't come to you but you have to go and search, grab them and climb the corporate ladder as it is the way forward.

At present he is writing a book on Market "Research".

His advice to the youth of Sri Lanka are don't compare, be yourself, believe in yourself and work hard.
