AD - acoustic dedication

by Mahes Perera

"We are not like other bands, we are different" claims a confident Prageeth Jerom Silva of the recently formed AD (Anno Domini). Lead vocalist of the group with an arresting voice and style he was originally a member of Damage before he bailed out to study audio engineering and music in the UK.

"AD is a pure acoustic band with an extensive repertoire ranging from standards, oldies belonging to the 60's the 80's. We play pop, rock, slow rock, folk and of course blues. We have no drummer, so there's the difference! We have with us young, talented and experienced musicians who have injected much life into the present music industry" states a forthright Prageeth Jerom. And how true that is!

The quartet AD came into being roughly seven months ago and since then the group has succeeded in creating successful waves with their music. They are now featured at Zanziba on Wednesdays and Saturdays and hold the spotlight on Fridays at the Deli Market. Last week they went full throttle to stage 'AD & Friends in Concert' to raise funds for a deserving cause.

"Musician Alexi Fernando needs dialysis treatment thrice a week which is quite costly. So we organised this concert to be staged at the World Trade Centre and young bands and musicians came forward to support us. Flame Unplugged, Ad Lib, Devashrie de Silva, Kavitha Gunasekera, Gajan Maheson, Robin Birendra, Jude Thiyagaraja, Sanjeewa Uyanhewa and the El Latino Dancers will be performing. We would be grateful if those who want to make contributions towards Alexis cause contact us" appeals Prageeth.

Who are the other members of this band that's now going places? Let's clue you in. Playing bass and sharing the vocals with Prageeth is none other than Shehan Perera who was a member of Damage-winner of double Golden Clef Awards in 2002. The group at present is enjoying unprecedented success in Dubai, but Shehan had to be in Colombo to complete his law studies. The other two members are from the young Old Joes Choir.

There's Adrian de Niese who plays lead guitar and his choral experience is an asset to AD. He has performed at many Chorale concerts, with the unplugged duo US2 and is facile in the different singing styles.

Suraj Gunawardena the rhythm guitarist who adds added flavour to the vocals, prefers to spend more time with music and as such has given up his 9 to 5 job.

With abounding and exciting talent in them any wonder Ad is gaining swift popularity in today's scene. The music arrangements are handled by Prageeth and Shehan and together they are creating originals. Two significant singles are out.

The gospel song 'Saved' and 'You've Been Warned' with Gajan Maheson. There's more to follow says Prageeth with a wide devastating smile.
