New uniflow system to be tested today The new uniflow system which was put on hold last week will be tested today to find out whether it can reduce traffic congestion on Galle road and at the Duplication road. The uniflow system will introduce one way traffic flow to Colombo North from the Savoy Cinema up to Kollupitiya junction. Traffic moving towards south will proceed from the Liberty Plaza roundabout along R.A. De Mel Mawatha. City Traffic's Senior Supdt. of Police, Y.G.R.M. Lafir, said the success of the uniflow system will depend on the outcome of the test run on Sunday. He said if the scheme becomes a reality about 10 bus halts on Galle road from Kollupitiya junction to Wellawatte will be shifted to R.L. De Mel Mawatha. Commuters proceeding to Wellawatte will have to board buses at R.A. De Mel Mawatha. Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Law Order Tilak Ranavirajah, Senior officials of the Traffic Division, Municipal and other senior officials will supervise the scheme. According to the uniflow system each road will have six lanes which will reduce congestion on roads.It had been estimated that around 100,000 to 120,000 vehicles enter the city everyday. The new uniflow system has been designed with assistance from the Moratuwa university. Traffic police say business establishments and commuters will initially experience difficulties. The government will also take into consideration, representations made by the public to adopt suitable measures. (J.J.) |
