Employment assured for all jobless graduates by Ananda Kannangara The Finance Ministry on Friday reiterated that all unemployed graduates, currently being trained under the Government's scheme to provide them with jobs in the public sector institutions at the end of their training period will be served with letters of appointment. In an interview with the Sunday Observer Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that all trained graduates would be given permanent jobs under the Public Service Commission. Referring to certain remarks made on the proposed graduates' job scheme, the Deputy Minister said that the Government was firmly committed to provide permanent jobs for all registered 42,903 graduates in public sector institutions. Meanwhile, the Combined Unemployed Graduates' Association (CUGA) too expressed their confidence yesterday that they would be granted employment after the three-month training period was over. CUGA Convener, Chandana Sooriyaarachchi, said that although no firm assurance had been given in writing, they were confident of the Government's positive stand on the job scheme, he said. Sooriyaarachchi said that in the first batch of 17,023 graduates selected for training, about 3400 names had been deleted later as they had failed to attend regular training. "Our union had come to know that some graduates who were already in employment on high salaries too had applied for jobs in response to the government's request, anticipating higher salaries than they receive now," he said. These unemployed graduates will be provided employment in the fields of technology, computer, teaching, clerical and in various other suitable categories. Asked whether the government was able to grant such a large number of jobs to graduates within a short period, Sooriyaarachchi remarked that it was not a difficult task, since several ministries had already informed the Management Service Department (MSD) of the Ministry of Finance about details of 25,000 to 30,000 vacancies. |
