'Reactivate Prof. Senaka Bibile's drug policy'

Sri Jayawardenapura University Medical Faculty Prof. Narada Warnasooriya recently said that neglecting the already implemented "national drug policy" by respective governments, has largely benefited multinational drug importers to fulfil their ultimate goal of earning a colossal sum of money from imported expensive drugs.

He said that if this "national drug policy", which was implemented in the middle of 1970's by the late Prof. Senaka Bibile was still active, millions of ordinary people in the country would have benefited.

He made these observations at a ceremony held at the Colombo Public Library Auditorium to coincide with the 27th death anniversary of the late Prof. Senaka Bibile. Mrs. Leela Bibile, wife of Late Prof. Bibile, was also present at the ceremony, conducted by the students organisations, affiliated to five medical faculties in the country. "Since the authorities have turned a blind eye on this matter, these multinational drug importers here freely give publicity to various drugs by using the media," he said.

Prof. Warnasooriya also lamented the use of various kinds of unhygienic processed foods by people in this country after watching TV advertisements and said that the country must have national policies on important consumer items to protect consumers.

He also remarked that the late Prof. Bibile rendered an invaluable service for the uplift of the health sector in the country and said that if the late Professor was alive today, he would have definitely urged the authorities to implement a national policy on drugs for the benefit of millions of ordinary people.

Journalist Denagama Siriwardana also spoke.
