Jeyaraj blames CAA for gas price hike by Rohan Mathes Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle blames Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) staff for authorising the 'Laugf Gas' price hike. Minister Fernandopulle told the Sunday Observer that Laugf Gas obtained gas from the Sapugaskanda refinery below the world market prices. Their cost would amount around Rs. 507 inclusive of VAT, and they could offer it to the consumers around Rs. 600 to Rs. 650 per cylinder. However Fernandopulle said, "Laugfs have requested a Rs.90 increase from the existing price and the CAA has authorised it. This is unfair. I think some officers of the CAA are behind these price hikes. This is a matter for the Power and Energy Ministry to look into". Speaking further, the Minister denied media reports pertaining to the control of bread prices. "I have not discussed this matter with the Bakery owners as alleged in the media. But if requested by the people, I would do so in the future. For the moment we have not taken such a decision", he added. |
