Sihala Urumaya in disarray

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Ex-leader of the Sihala Urumaya and advisor of the Hela Urumaya Tilak Karunaratne will address a public rally at a UNP rally on Oct. 17 giving reasons for defecting from the Hela Urumaya and rejoining the UNP.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has already appointed Karunaratne as the Bandaragama UNP organiser.

When contacted by the Sunday Observer Karunaratne admitted that he had decided to rejoin the UNP but declined to give reasons.

Karunaratne was compelled to give up the hard line position on the North and East issue since the Hela Urumaya sidelined him from the party.

He has told his supporters that the Hela Urumaya has no political future and it will face the same fate of the Sihala Urumaya in the future. When contacted a Hela Urumaya member said that Karunaratne criticised the UNP sponsored peace process at one time.

We are surprised as to how Karunaratne has given up his hardline view on the North and East issue and rejoined the UNP.
