STF guns down suspect Jude assailant

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE and M.G.A. NASSER Our Akkaraipattu Corr.

The Special Task Force (STF) unit based at Akkaraipattu shot dead an unidentified gunman suspected to be from the anti-Pabakaran faction believed to have killed Jude, a prominent LTTE leader yesterday.

The incident happened around 10.45 yesterday when two persons boarded a bus at Akkaraipattu bound to Pottuvil and shot dead a LTTE leader inside the bus. The driver of the bus too was seriously injured due to the shooting and was rushed to the Ampara hospital. Meanwhile the STF patrol units combed Kanchakuda, a cleared area in the Akkaraipattu and tracked down the gunman in a house.

The gunman who attempted to throw a grenade at the STF party was shot dead. A pistol in his possession was recovered by the STF party.

Meanwhile a tense situation has arisen as a result of the shooting in the Akkaraipattu area. The STF units are currently patrolling the area.

STF's Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Nimal Lewke said the STF patrols will not hesitate to apprehend any armed group committing crimes in cleared areas. "This has proved that security forces are not supporting any break away group," About two years ago seven LTTE cadres were shot dead when they surrounded and attacked a STF camp in Akkaraipattu where Jude had played a prominent role, sources said.
