Poaching Indian fishermen nabbed by Anton Nonis While a combined search by the Navy and Police for eight Indian poachers in the missing list for about a month still continues, another incidence of poaching by a fresh group of Indian fishermen in seas off Mannar was detected last Wednesday. On this occasion, there had been five trawlers and 20 fishermen. Commodore Jayantha Perera told the Sunday Observer that poaching by Indian fishermen in the territorial waters of Sri Lanka was rampant. The Sri Lanka Navy is being assisted by the Indian Navy to put a stop to poaching by the Indian fishermen. Surveillance by the navy was carried out as a deterrent to poaching. The catholic hierarchy in Mannar and the Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries are closely monitoring the naval operations in this regard, to put a stop to this illegal pursuit, Perera said. All 20 offenders were produced in courts. There were five skippers in all who were detained while the balance 15 were released. They are to be expatriated to India in a day or two, Commodore Perera said. The five trawlers have been confiscated. They are due to be sold at a public auction. |
