Thuhashini keeps going places at Holston Hills

by LAL GUNASEKERA

A former Sri Lanka amateur champion golfer Thuhashini Selvaratnam is continuing to fare well and keep Lanka's flag flying in the United States of America. Last month (September), she did well to enter the semi-finals of the 18th US Mid Amateur Championship at the Holston Hills Golf Club in Knoxville, Tennesse on a tough 6222-yard Donald Ross Layout Course.

Thuhashini met the ultimate winner Werovaski in the semi-final. She was 2-up on the 12th hole, but lost two holes in succession and was all square coming to the 18th. She was unfortunate to go into the greenside bunker on the 18th with Werovaski winning 1-up.

In the first two rounds of the match-play, Thuhashini beat her opponents quite comfortably 8/7 and 9/8 tying a 2001 record for the largest margin of victory in the tournament. In the third-round, she met Carol Semple Thompson (a 7 times USGA champion and member of the Curtis Cup, who was the favourite to win).

Thuhashini playing excellent golf, holing out from a bunker on a crucial hole, beat Thompson 4/2.

The sectional qualifying round was played in Arizona, and Thuhashini, qualified with a 2 under-par gross 71 returning the best score and was the medallist winner. The format was two medal rounds where the best 64 players were chosen and then five rounds of match-play.

There were 144 participants and after the two medal rounds, Thuhashini, was tied for the eighth place with a score of 150 (75, 75).

Thuhashini was adjudged the 'Player of the Year' by the Arizona State Golf Association (ASGA) for three consecutive years (2001 to 2003) and has won the Arizona State Stroke-Play Championship for the last four years (2000 to 2003). Last year (2003), she won the Club Championship of the Desert Hills Golf Club in Arizona, and was the Arizona State amateur champion too for three successive years. She has also represented the State in Match-Play tournaments regularly.

Before leaving for the USA, Thuhashini won seven national titles within nine months in the 1999-2000 season. They were the Sri Lanka amateur for the third occasion, Singapore Open, Hon Kong Open, China Open, Thailand Open, All-India Open and the Emirates Open.

She also won the Epson Sourjana Open Amateur in Kuala Lumpur and was runner-up at the Malaysian Open too.
