India make clean sweep at World Carrom C'ships by Leslie Fernando Indian men and women players sliced their way scintillatingly to take the major honours, making a clean sweep in the team events and the individual events at the five-day 4th World Carrom Championships hosted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka and concluded at the Lotus Room at Grand Oriental Hotel yesterday. The Indian, carromites showed supremacy over their opposing players from other eight countries to retain the men's and women's team events, men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles titles for the fourth consecutive time. Indeed a creditable performances for the Indian slicing squad. Yesterday too the day belonged to the Indians R. M. Shankara and Sai Kumar Approrwa were crowned as the world men's and women's singles champions respectively. In the men's singles final it was an all-India affair with R. M. Shankara and Sandeep Deorukar battling out for honours. Shankar a with superior placing, accurate pocketing won the title in straight sets over colleague Sandeep 25-12 and 20-20. Shankara also perform well to achieve a good double winning the men's doubles title partnering Dilesh Khedikaram. Shankara retained the men's singles having won it at the 3rd World Carrom Championships held in New Delhi in 1999. Sai Kumar Approrwa clinched the women's singles title defeating teammate Parimi Nirmala in the final also in straight sets 25-13, 25-15. Approrwa displayed top slicing with fine thumbing and straight shots. Approrwa also bagged a double winning the women's doubles combining with Parimi Nirmala. Sri Lanka players Viraj Fernando, Chamil Cooray and D. Nishantha Fernando were knocked out in the quarter finals of the men's singles. Sri Lanka's number one Chamil Cooray fought gallantly before going down to Kubendra Babu 25-4, 22-25, 25-12. Chamil equalled one-all against Babu, but in the final set he lacked finishing touches. Viraj lost to R. M. Shankara 21-1, and 21-7, Nishantha was beaten by Sandeep Deorukar 25-10, 25-3. In the women's singles quarter final Nayana Wickremasinghe failed to live up to expectation losing to Indian women's champion Approrwa 25-4, 25-3. In the men's team event, India beat Sri Lanka 2-1 and in the women's team event India beat Sri Lanka 3-0 on Thursday. Men's Doubles - R. M. Shankara and Dilesh Khedikaron (India) beat Sandeep Deorukar and Kubendra Babu (India) 0-25, 25-5, 25-17. Men's Doubles third place - D. N. Fernando and Chamil Cooray (Sri Lanka) beat H. Rahuman and M. Ali (Bangladesh) 8-25, 25-17, 25-11. Women's Doubles - Parimi Nirmala and Sai Kumar Approrwa (India) beat Rushmi Kumari and Katana Suvarana (India) 25-9, 22-25, 25-8. Women's Doubles third place - Amitha Wickremasinghe and Nayana Wickremasinghe (Sri Lanka) beat Affee Funisha and Aishath Faizma (Maldives) 25-8, 25-8. |
