PM stresses CSR

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept which is important for every corporate citizen in the country, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

"Best practices of CSR coupled with sound governance should be focused as it will help the country to attract investment," Prime Minister Rajapaksa said at the inauguration of Business Convention 2004,organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.This year theme was 'CSR for Re-Shaping Business'.

Speaking at the ceremony he said that it is up to the business community to practise CSR for the well- being of the country.

He said: "CSR was a lesson from the past history, it is applicable for every citizen in the world, to become subsevient to the society."

Today most of companies face three challenges from glibalisation,NGOs and environment, and adopting a proper CRM strategy would help to resist companies in this competitive world, Prime Minister Rajapaksa emphasised.

Prime Minister stressed that it is natural that CSR practices are encouraged and nurtured to manage companies well, as a result it would automatically spell out massive responsibility towards all stakeholder including the entire society.

This would also ensure that decision making in the business sector would be done, keeping in mind the ethical values, with legal requirements and of course, respect for people,communities and above all environment.

Chief Operational Officer, Taj Group Leisure sector Jamshed Daboo delivering the keynote speech under the topic of 'Tata's Contribution to Transformation of Society,' said that Tata group' main purpose was to improve the quality of life of the people.He said that Tata does not aspire to get undue milage from contribution that made to the community.

Daboo said that the company has created a trust to support the people and Tata Business Excellence model is always concerned with the importance of best CSR practices.

Guest of Honour at the ceremony Franklyn Amerasinghe emphasised on the importance of CSR.
