Three wheelers to distribute fish by Chanuka Mannapperuma A novel program to distribute quality hygienic fish at affordable prices using 1000 three wheelers will be launched by the Ministry of Fisheries,creating a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities. The Ministry of Fisheries has decided to deploy 1000 mobile three wheelers to distribute fresh fish throughout the country. The project will be implemented at an estimated cost of around Rs. 500 million. Each three wheeler will consist of a modern refrigerator and one will cost nearly Rs. 500,000, a Ministry official said. The main objective of this scheme is to provide fresh, quality fish to all consumers at an affordable prices. A Ministry official said,that already 16 fish stalls have been set up in several fishing areas to directly purchase fish from the fishermen and expect to increase the number up to 50 covering almost all the fishing areas. Besides, the Ministry also plans to increase fish selling outlets from 76 upto 500 around the country. Under this scheme the first 100 vehicles will be used to transport fish in the areas of Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Gampaha within this year. "Within the next two years, we are expecting to utilize other vehicles for a stream-lined transport system within the country." said the official adding that they hope to install " music " for the three-wheelers to make it more familiar to the people. This scheme will create more than 1000 direct job opportunities apart from a large number of indirect employment for the people, specially those who are engaged in the fisheries sector, official said. |
