He was born to a family of two boys. His father E.D.W. Jayewardene, was an officer in the British Army and later on the Branch Manager of Lake House Kandy. He has written two books on Masks and Water Gardening. His mother Doreen Samaraweera attended Southlands College, Galle, Ladies College Colombo and Colombo University.

Jayewardene attended Trinity College, Kandy from Kindergarden till he left school. "At Trinity I captained the under 17 Rugby team represented school in Athletics and was a school officer." School taught us the value of maintaining high standards at all times and this has helped me to this day, he added.

"Once I completed my schooling I got a scholarship to go to Austria where I got a Diploma in Hotel Management and Tourism from the Klessheim Hotel School in Salzburg, Austria." Before he got the Diploma he worked at Beach luxury Hotel Pakistan where he underwent training in kitchen, restaurant, bar, banqueting, reception and purchasing.

Once he got his diploma he worked at Carlton Elite Hotel Switzerland, Hotel Zum Hirschen Austria, Hotel George V Paris, and Hotel Excelsior England from March 1968 to October 1970 where he got a training in all aspects including purchasing, storage, food and beverage control, restaurant service, reception, controls marketing, training in banqueting, room service, kitchen and accounts.

Jayewardene completed his training in all aspects of hotel management and once he got his diploma he worked in Austria for a short time and moved to France where he worked at Hotel George V considered to be the best five star in Paris at that time.

He also worked in Manchester UK for a while before he moved to Pegusus Reef as the Assistant Manager Food and Beverage. It was the first five star hotel opened in Sri Lanka and was managed by the same company which managed the hotel he worked in Manchester.

He then moved to Browns Beach Hotel as the General Manager and from there to Browns Group Motels as Director General Manager and from 1978-1979 he was the director of Browns Tours.

Jayewardene was the Director General and General Manager of Ceylon Hotels Corporation from 1979 -1980 before he moved on as the President of PJ Hotel Consultants Sri Lanka. PJ Hotel Consultants Ltd provided a complete managerial service for hotels and restaurants from the feasibility report stage to operational stage and has managed several hotels and department stores in Sri Lanka.

He was also with D.A.J. International Ltd Maldive Islands before he joined Mount Lavinia Hotel as its Director and General Manager.

His next appointment was Director Group Operations at Universal Resorts Malaysia. He was also the Director General Manager at Compagnie Seychelles de promotion Hoteliere ltd (COSPROH) Seychelles from 1992-1995.

Again he joined Mount Lavinia hotel as its Director General Manager before launching Sanasuma Developments Ltd in 1998. In 1998 he also found time to publish the novel "A Journey Forward."

He is married to Carin Lundqvist a swedish national and they have two children. Both are graduates from Universities in London and Stockholm. At present the daughter is studying for her PhD at the University of Hawaii.
