by Mahes Perera

The music at the UBG swings into live action beginning today, a variety of up market acts featuring as a preamble to the much awaited festive season.

Warren & Rozette

Among the bands featured will be Warren and Rozette, Jazz Project, Flame and Dream Team. complementing the music will be tempting theme night spreads like the Italian night on Fridays, the Asian BBQ's and Seafood night on Saturdays.

Warren and Rozette the exciting music act have always given their audience the best in a music selection that has over the years never failed them. Warren whose keyboard artistry is a major plus for him is also a vocalist of repute - his repertoire though leaning on classic rock in the early years now incorporates the hits of the '60s '70s and '80s which music lovers are in search of these days. Rozette's swing style ideally jells with Warren's vocal artistry.

Her forte is ballads modern and popular but her repertoire includes the best of todays pop and contemporary hits.

A Caribbean night awaits you at the UBG on Saturday October 30, complete with exciting Caribbean food and rasta rhythms from the band Sparks.

Union Assurance lends a helping hand

The Sri Lanka Welfare Society of Blind conducted the Annual White Cane Day on October 15 and distributed White Canes to the blind community.

The White Cane Day was first introduced by an American Lawyer in Human Rights who contested in Courts on behalf of the members of the blind community in view of the safety when walking on public Highways and other places.

The White Cane Day was proposed during a conference which was conducted by UNESCO in 1969 in Colombo. It was decided to hold an International White Cane Day every year on October 15.

Picture shows Marina Tharmaratnam, CEO, Union Assurance Ltd., handing over the White Cane package to P.P. Meththananda, Treasurer, Sri Lanka Welfare Society of Blind.

Also in the picture L-R are Kelum Senanayake, AGM Life UAL, Mahinda Gunasekara, Manager Marketing Operations, UAL, Sanath Wijesekera, Manager Life, UAL.

Folk music from the Swiss Alps

Water Tower Band

The four piece 'Water Tower Band' from Switzerland made a tremendous impact with music lovers with their programme of traditional Swiss folk music from the mountain regions, which included fascinating spells of yodelling and intricate artistry on the piano accordion and clarinet, which proved that over the years the members have honed their craft to perfection.

Sadly they say that the new generation are shunning these traditional expressions of music and are choosing the electronic instruments to express their music with loud bursts of crashing chords on their guitars!

The Water Tower Band are currently featured at the Trans Asia Swiss Food Festival which closes on Sunday October 24.

A country famous for its cheese and chocolates, the Swiss Food Festival is a gourmet's paradise with traditional specialities from every part and village of Switzerland.

Likewise music of the Water Tower Band reflects the attractive old waltzes, marches popular songs besides the folk music, with Edelweiss and 'Sound of Music' hot favourites that came from the Austrian Alps.

It's a musical opportunity that should not be missed but savoured, because here in Sri Lanka, the piano accordion unfortunately is soon on its way to be obsolete.
